Paper Abstract:
|
This paper explores how technology-enhanced simulations can refine K-12 students' mental models and decision-making skills within the context of maritime careers. As part of a regional initiative, over 1,300 students from multiple school divisions engaged with a suite of digital simulations interactive 360-degree environments, 3D models, and embedded game simulations. These simulations were designed to expose learners to real-world maritime concepts while addressing common misconceptions about the shipbuilding and ship repair industries. The study assessed how students' mental models shifted after interacting with the simulations and examined emerging decision-making behaviors through embedded tasks and feedback loops. Findings indicate that students not only developed more accurate understandings of maritime technologies and career pathways but also demonstrated growth in reflective and adaptive decision-making skills. The paper discusses implications for designing future adaptive simulation environments that support conceptual change and cognitive development. By aligning immersive technologies with authentic, decision-rich contexts, this work offers a promising framework for using simulation-based learning to prepare students for complex, technology-driven career domains. |
