Paper Abstract:      In every spectrum of computer security the final defence against the mounting crisis of computer hackers, is the humble text-based password. There is a fundamental problem with this however, as the minds of human users are simply not designed to remember passwords with any security value; this represents a significant security risk to the entire world of computing. This paper considers and evaluates current solutions to the problem and concludes that, although many solutions display a gamut of advantages, visual passwords have flexibility to offer an affordable, non-intrusive, adaptable and secure means of authentication. Current visual password schemes are analysed and a prototype visual system, ‘SafeCracker’ is presented. This new system aims to address current problem areas, especially the issue of observer attacks, and is over twice as secure as PIN authentication. The usability of the system is examined through user testing.
