Paper Abstract:      We report results from an analysis of virtual scientific collaboration situated around a high resolution computed tomography scanner. We begin by stating that science is becoming increasingly collaborative and international and that this has produced the need for technological support structures to enable seamless collaboration. We also find that in all scientific collaborations the issue of control and ownership arises as scientists attempt to work across national and institutional borders. The goal of this paper is to examine the roles that control and ownership play within virtual large-scale scientific collaborations. The findings of this paper document how issues of ownership and control are complicated by the virtual nature of the collaboration. We elaborate these findings in terms of ownership and control of data, specimens and research results. We argue that in each of these categories the technologies that are employed to enable the virtual collaboration both enhance and complication the collaboration. We conclude that ownership and control must be addressed socio-technically, encoded within both the social and technical systems supporting the collaboratory.
