Paper Abstract:
|
This paper explores the potential to leverage social media's affordances to operationalize the mode 3 university vision of
greater entanglement between higher education institutions and the wider world. While the mode 3 concept reimagines
universities as more porous and engaged with society, there is currently an execution gap in translating this vision into
transformative institutional change. The paper argues that social media, despite its well-known issues, offers affordances
for learning and connection that universities are not fully leveraging. It proposes that rather than rejecting social media,
universities should innovate its governance to harness its capabilities for fostering education and societal good, in the
spirit of a mode 3 vision. This paper's concepts provide the foundation for an empirical action research project that
ultimately aims to bring into being a university-owned social media platform. This research seeks to bridge conceptual
work on the mode 3 university with social media's practical affordances to explore pathways for transformative
institutional change in higher education. |
