Paper Abstract:      The use of TOEIC scores as authentic proof of English ability among many international institutions and some major companies in Japan has become a common practice in recent years. This development is motivating many universities in Japan to invest in Computer Assisted Language Learning environments to enable their students to adequately prepare for higher TOEIC scores to compete effectively with their foreign counterparts and participate more effectively in the global economy. However, some of the available systems for TOEIC preparation do not incorporate adequate number of items that consider the Japanese socio-cultural context which has been found to improve comprehension and retention. This work shows how a team of English faculty members provided in-house TOEIC preparation materials that integrated the essential business English taught in the F2F class and the Japanese socio-cultural context to enable scaffolding and motivate students’ learning for higher TOEIC scores. An operational test with more than 400 first year students was conducted and the results showed that their TOEIC scores were statistically significant, p .001, when compared to the scores obtained by using only a commercial system.
