Paper Abstract:      The Internet, and the World Wide Web in particular, have provided new opportunities for customisable provision of information that was hitherto not possible. This paper reports on a project that aims at designing and developing a web-based customisable version of The Times Good University Guide. This is the most popular and acclaimed guide to UK Higher Education institutions and has been published in a paper-based book format for the last decade. The project originated from pressures from prospective students, parents and university administrators who were not entirely satisfied with the generic static printed statistics provide by the book. In fact, all these interested parties would like to be offered the possibility to customise the available statistics to meet their specific requirements and needs. The web, provides a unique e-publishing environment that allows the exploitation and customisation of the statistics far beyond the possibilities of the printed version. Therefore, a web version of The Times Good University Guide has been developed under the sponsorship of PricewaterhouseCoopers. This web application was implemented using a prototyping approach that resulted in changes in technological solutions and incremental fine tuning of requirements. This paper describes both the prototyping process and the current online Good University Guide.
