Paper Abstract:      The LokaNytt project’s aim is to create location-based news services for mobile phones. We have developed a publishing system called LokaSkrivar for journalists to write and publish geo-tagged news, and a LokaLesar application for mobile phones with web browsers. Here we present an experiment with the LokaNytt location-aware journalism concept and the mobile reader tool LokaLesar. The experiment was conducted in a realistic setting, and data was collected from respondents staying at Voss, Norway during the yearly Extreme Sports Week. Journalist students wrote news articles about extreme sports events, and 32 respondents tested LokaLesar for accessing and reading these news articles. Quantitative and qualitative data about the respondents’ impressions were collected and analyzed. They found both the software and journalistic concept easy to understand. The experimental method used suggests a general approach for evaluating location-based services for mobile phones using a realistic setting within constrained localities.
