Paper Abstract:      This paper presents preliminary findings from a systematic literature review on learner engagement in digital learning environments, conducted in the context of developing a national public health educational platform in France. The study investigates how to support learning in open platforms, the nature of learner engagement, and methods to measure and foster it. Engagement is examined both as an indicator of learning and as a predictor of success, with various conceptualizations identified in the literature, including behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and academic dimensions. The review analyzed 608 articles across ten scientific databases, narrowing down to 79 relevant publications after filtering by discipline and publication date. The findings highlight diverse approaches to measuring engagement—through activity quantity, time investment, and quality of learner behavior—and provide a theoretical basis for defining meaningful engagement indicators. These results will inform the design of trace collection and analytics tools for the forthcoming digital learning platform.
