Paper Abstract:      This paper explores the pedagogic importance of incorporating varied spaces and perspectives to the student learning experience, focusing on the ability of m-learning to develop confidence and independence in our learners. Evidence relating to these themes was initially identified within a physical geography module entitled “Environmental Techniques” in 2007 and was further developed in the subsequent larger cohort for 2008. Independence in learning, and the potential ability of mobile learning to foster this quality, further arose in the context of using mobile learning to support a human geography fieldcourse to Dublin in 2009, a module that was designed to teach urban geography and research skills. Prima facie, the purposive nature in the way we have used m-learning in these two modules has many differences. In both cases however, we use multi-modal mobile approaches to bridge and blend learning between intellectual and physical spaces. The sense of continuity in student responses to these interventions provides a strong indication that the themes of confidence and independence are material strengths, coming out of an approach that blends digital m-learning with tradi-tional field and class delivery, that to date have not often been brought into the m-learning arena.
