Paper Abstract:      The internet is part of the life worlds of teenagers. Digital natives are said to understand and navigate in it easily as they grow up with new technologies. This study, conducted in 2009 and 2010, examines the online search behaviour and internet use of 14 year olds. The pupils who participated came from two different types of schools and representative areas in Austria. The target group was chosen as pupils in Austria make a choice about their further course of education at the age of 14. The study focused on socio-demographic factors like gender, social status, migration background, and type of school in order to display a broad picture of e-literacy among Austria’s digital natives. The study design includes a computer-based questionnaire, test series, and a visualization of surf paths. In this paper the results of the study are put into a theoretical and practical perspective, focusing on the current status of the digital divide among Austrian youth.
