Paper Abstract:
|
European innovation data show a small proportion of innovative companies cooperating with other companies or organizations in R&D activities, in Portugal. Suppliers of equipment, materials, components or software and consultants, commercial laboratories or private research institutes remained the preferred partners for cooperation in innovation activities. If only a small proportion of the innovative Portuguese companies cooperate in R&D activities, on the opposite side of the continuum, companies carrying out intramural R&D without any formal collaboration with other companies or organizations in R&D activities is expected. Are these companies performing intramural R&D investment and operations by themselves? Are they newly businesses? And in terms of size? Regarding economic activity, to which sectors do they belong: low-technology and market low-intensive industries and services or more advanced sectors? And if so, how they compare with the "innovative cooperating companies" in R&D? The study addresses a relatively underexplored phenomenon: companies performing "organised" R&D alone. Intersects entrepreneurship, innovation management, and policy analysis with a unique subset of firms ("mono-beneficiaries") which has not been widely documented. This work fills a gap in innovation literature, especially regarding SMEs. Our main findings bring managerial implications for both private and public sectors. As it demonstrates well succeeded innovation strategies of individual "organised R&D" performers, provide a model for regions or countries aimed at improving their innovation ecosystem, that informs innovation policy with potential refinements. |
