Paper Abstract:      Mobile technology mediated learning, or m-learning, is a relatively recent approach within Geography but one that is increasingly being adopted. Despite this rapid uptake there has been considerably less thought applied as to how we might adjust our assessment protocols so that the overall learning experience remains appropriately aligned. In this case study, we introduced new generation digital technologies to human geography undergraduates as part of a compulsory second year fieldcourse to Dublin. A suite of geo-contextualised mediascapes were constructed to both train the students in more traditional field techniques such as observational skills, as well as to facilitate more intellectually challenging connections relating to the themes of the fieldcourse. As part of the constructive alignment of the module the students themselves had to design a group mediascape and individually reflect on the mediascape experience. We explore our success or otherwise in designing an assessment regime that captures the field experience as a whole. Evaluation, conducted via a focus group, student reflective diaries and staff reflections, identified that the use of a combined mediascape-essay approach as a major component of the assessment successfully captured the main elements of the learning and teaching experience and facilitated deeper learning.
