Paper Abstract:      A cross-cultural music museum system is a new computational environment to promote cross-cultural understanding and communication through the use of multimedia. This system provides a new platform for evoking the imagination of users regarding cultural diversity by presenting the variety of emotional responses to music expressed in different cultures. The system consists of music analysis, search and visualization functions, and is characterized by two main features: (1) a culture-dependent semantic metadata-extraction method, which extracts both musical elements (e.g., key, pitch and tempo) and impression metadata (e.g., sad, happy and dreamy) corresponding to properties of each musical culture, and (2) a cross-cultural computing mechanism to represent the differences and similarities of various musical cultures. In this system, computing the differences and similarities of various musical cultures is realized by applying impression metadata extraction method to culture-dependent music, and extracting culture-dependent music impression. The multimedia database treating Kansei (psychological response) is the key technology in the system because simple impression words are utilized as common terms among users to understand other cultures in the system. Using a music analysis function, a user can acquire the features of unknown musical cultures by comparing his/her impressions of music from those cultures with those from identified ones, and also understand the differences and similarities in musical expression of a particular impression as well as in interpretation of a music piece among various musical cultures. In the prototype system, traditional music is used as a common cultural element among different cultures. By using the extracted features and impression metadata from traditional music, the system provides the functions to convert musical elements to culture-dependent and sharable impression metadata for cross-cultural communication.
