Paper Abstract:      This paper sheds light on inequality from three interrelated perspectives: globalization, technology, and culture. It draws upon the online presence of the world's largest corporations, the Fortune Global 500, to investigate how domain name distribution and Web site popularity reflect global inequality. The results suggest a virtual divide, favoring powerful global players over local participants, yet awareness and local participation are critical to achieving equality and sustainability. Exploring how these two aspects of transnational corporations' Internet presence influence online culture, the virtual divide, and economic inequality provides a springboard for adding an Internet dimension to future research on globalization and sustainability.
