Paper Abstract:
|
This paper describes the ongoing design of a web-based application which is intended to help prevent some of the major
problems experienced in the 2003 SARS outbreak as well as similar public health crises. It outlines the project, called
MedPost, the problems the application addresses, how these are addressed, as well as some of the underlying cognitive
and data-related reasons for the problems. The application of a scenario-driven User-Centered Design (UCD) approach
adopted for MedPost is described briefly. It allowed us to identify the different types of users who would play a role in a
major public health incident. The UCD approach also helped to understand these users information needs and to design
the user interface so as to avoid information overload. |
