Paper Abstract:      The assessment of any chronic disease is an integral part of the treatment and provides key information related to the person’s condition and its management. In the case of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), the assessment process is particularly important as it helps to determine whether or not pharmaceutical and/or surgical interventions are required. The on-going assessment of an AS patient is by means of scheduled, periodic reviews; the elapsed time between assessments being related to the patient’s condition, and/or to the clinic’s resource constraints. The trend is towards longer periods between assessments and this is deemed to be unsatisfactory by AS support groups and clinicians alike who believe that infrequent assessments may result in the earlier onset of advanced disability. Currently, the assessment information is mainly 2-Dimensional, paper-based and arguably clinician oriented. We believe that there are more effective ways to manage the assessment process and that this can be done through utilising new innovations in ICT. This paper presents a possible means of enhancing assessment and feedback for AS; it has potential benefit for both client and clinician and uses 3-Dimensional visualisation to augment existing forms of measurement. The goal of the research is to design a different means of measurement that is not only more efficient but is also more effective way of communicating and feeding back assessment information.
