Paper Abstract:      Current reluctance by some education and training institutions to adopt online content delivery practices has prompted this investigation into content authoring software tools and methodologies, and their suitability to address current timeand cost-critical contexts. Traditional content authoring tools are acknowledged as the successors to the early use of programming languages to achieve networked content. Problems with traditional authoring tools are identified and current trends in design and development of e-learning content are explored. This paper critically assesses current approaches to online content development that together with the identified importance of standards, project management principles, and integrated evaluation, inform recommendations for the rapid design and development of online content.
