Paper Abstract:      Malaysia will become an ageing nation in 2035. With the popularity of smartphone available in the current mobile market, it is undeniable to ignore the needs of smartphone and its mobile application by older adults. Previous literature studies describe the mobile phone use, in particular related to feature phones among older adults in Malaysia. There are limited studies illustrating the smartphone usage among older adults in Malaysia. This paper aims to fill the literature gap by investigating the smartphone trend and its mobile apps among the older adult population. A survey was conducted with 44 older adults aged 60-74. The findings reveal that majority own a smartphone these days as compared to feature phones. By and large, they prefer Android phone (84.1%) and the top mobile apps use are messaging (i.e. Whatsapp), video (i.e. YouTube), photography, utility, social media (i.e. Facebook) apps. The major problems raised by older adults using mobiles are battery finished fast, small keypad, complicated and difficult to use. This study gives insight and implication to mobile operators of smartphone usage for grey market and also mobile designers or developers for their mobile apps development.
