Paper Abstract:      This research compares two teaching methods: student-centered learning that uses the interactive whiteboard with the more traditional teacher-centered approach. The study included two groups of undergraduate students: a control group in which students were taught in the traditional style and a treatment group which was student directed using the interactive whiteboard. Both received instruction in the same content. Pre and post tests given to the two groups before and after instruction were compared to determine gains in learning. Results between pre and post tests indicated significant gains in students’ test scores in both groups, but a significantly larger gain by the students in the treatment group, who received instructions with the interactive whiteboard, compared to the students in the control group, who received traditional teaching strategies such as PowerPoint enhanced lectures that are typically used in higher education. Students also wrote short essays reflecting how the course had impacted them both from a personal perspective, as well as future educators.
