Paper Abstract:      Many children already have access to a number of handheld and mobile devices for private use. However, this mobile trend does not appear to be reflected in the school. There are many barriers and triggers for such use, and in this paper we focus on the teacher’s perception of mobile technology and its affordances for pedagogical practices and activities in the classroom. We emphasise the relationship between teacher’s perception and pedagogical practices as seen through ontask activies. This paper is based on classroom observations, informal conversations and interviews with teachers in two classroom settings, one in the US and one in Norway. We use a tools/signs dichotomy as a conceptualisation of how the teachers perceive how the mobile devices mediate the pedagogical practices.
