Paper Abstract:      This paper reports on research that was carried out to identify the tacit mental structure, of the expertise, of voltage controllers in an electrical utility control centre. The research was multidisciplinary but focused on Industrial and Cognitive Psychology theory and Neuro-Linguistic Programming elicitation techniques. The controllers were first observed working on a simulator. They were then interviewed in-depth in order to identify their control strategies, visualization techniques, and tacit mental models. The sample included expert and novice voltage controllers as well as one Man Machine Interface (MMIS) designer. The findings showed that controllers have developed sophisticated tacit mental strategies and vivid mental imagery that allow them to simplify the plethora of data presented to them under emergency conditions enabling them to make fast intuitive decisions.
