Paper Abstract:      Mobile, wireless and ambient technologies enable new kinds of mediated interactions that can influence social and learning practices. In this paper we discuss the need to reflect on what social structures have to be represented and supported in collaborative learning scenarios that take place in a city-wide context. Our intent is to reflect on the influence of technology on social structures when supporting formal, informal and interleaves forms of learning; we try to look beyond traditional class-oriented activities and aim at fostering more fluid and emergent social structures. We present different theoretical approaches that look at social structures which are relevant in learning and collaborative activities. We outline some challenges to the design of a platform of services for providing flexible and tailored city-wide collaborative learning applications.
