Paper Abstract:      Individual and organisational learning are interconnected processes (e.g. Kim 1993, Schwaninger 2006). They influence each other substantially and are difficult to differentiate. In the PROLIX project, the organisational context at the test beds is assessed with regard to both these learning processes. This paper summarises the theoretical and methodical foundations of work-oriented learning in the fields of Human Resource Development (HRD), Training and Workplace Learning on the one hand and Knowledge Management and Organizational Learning on the other hand. Based on these foundations, a model of the organisational dimensions which impact learning in organisations is proposed. The model integrates an analysis approach drawn from activity theory. A corresponding assessment methodology (LAG) is used to analyse the status quo of an organisational entity with regard to learning processes and knowledge exchange. With respect to individual learning, a framework for goal- and context-oriented learning design provides decision support for instructional designers. With regard to organisational learning, the contextual characteristics are linked to corresponding knowledge management methods and instruments and relevant knowledge management measures proposed. Qualitative and quantitative empirical phases are conducted at a range of organisations to test the appropriateness of these two levels of decision support.
