Paper Abstract:      This paper presents a project entitled Solas, an online communications and creativity environment for hospitalised children, whose conditions necessitates them to be in protective isolation for long periods of time. The Solas environment applies state-of-the-art technology to provide a richer means of interaction with the outside world and to enhance a sense of presence and connectedness between the children and familiar people, places, and things that might strengthen their psychological well-being and overall healing potential. Solas will comprise mobile units which will bring new and exciting learning experiences to children while in isolation. It also aims to empower children through facilitating communication, creative activities and entertainment which it is hoped will provide a temporary distraction from their illness. Furthermore, Solas will provide an online collaborative space where children can use their creative abilities as well as share experiences.
