Paper Abstract:      E-Book readers are changing the way people read books in many ways. Unlike traditional books, E-Book Reader (Kindle, iBook etc.) can produce very valuable assessment and information of reading habits from the natural reading activity in a natural environment. It is possible to track minutes per page to understand reading behavior for individual readers and to find the most popular pages among books across several readers as well. Words that readers look up while reading a book can be collected and analyzed. We believe that this data can be effectively used for assessment of reading levels as well as the source for possible educational and fun activities. By processing the data, many valuable services could be provided back to readers, parents (teachers), authors, and publishers. This paper introduces the Smart Reader project whose ultimate goal is to develop a reading model to understand various readers’ reading comprehension and their learning experience. We attempt to analyze readers’ natural reading behavior and study their reading patterns along with developing new tools to aid the readers.
