Paper Abstract:      The internet is a critical infrastructure for modern societies. While most studies are dealing with the vulnerability of the Internet through cyber attacks our topic is the question of how resilient or vulnerable is the Internet to physical interventions with a strategic intention. The object of our investigation is to find such points in the world`s major backbone net and to identify the impacts their disturbance would have on the Internet in order to then discuss possibilities of prevention and crisis management. For this purpose we use the Internet Security computer Simulation (INESS). It is obviously not sufficient to merely pay attention to topology. In order to assess how vulnerable the Internet is we must understand the relations between three factors: topology; capacity utilization of the backbones and exchange points; packet transport. All three factors change over time.
