Paper Abstract:      Distributed or virtual software engineering teams face a magnitude of challenges pertaining to team composition, planning, scheduling, communication, control and feedback aspects of project artifacts. Based on past research in the areas of virtual teams and group communication, variables used in the past studies are classified in an Input-Process-Output format under Task, Member, Team, and Environment variables. As a framework for including task variables in future research, an overview of factors affecting software development for an onsite team and virtual teams is presented. Use of the W-model is suggested for distributed software engineering teams as it clearly distinguishes between development and testing phases. Directions are offered for future research in distributed/virtual teams.
