Paper Abstract:      This paper presents the results of a cross-cultural qualitative study on learner experiences of transactional distance, carried out at the Open University in the United Kingdom and the International Institute of Management LINK in Russia. A series of semi-structured face-to-face and electronic interviews were conducted across the two research sites to explore the nature of learner experiences with the phenomenon and the degree of their cultural specificity. Transactional distance was perceived as a fluid, complex construct, influenced by a wide range of contextual factors and mediated by the characteristics of individual learners. Student views on the importance of interpersonal interaction and autonomy in learning varied across the two cultural groups. The results of the study point to the necessity of more systematic empirical work on cross-cultural differences in distance and e-learning.
