Paper Abstract:      We evaluate an e-learning environment through the use of both quantitative and qualitative tools. Both methods provide different types of conclusions and levels of richness about how an e-learning site is used and both, we argue, are therefore an imperative part of the life cycle of e-learning development. We suggest that e-learning sites are unlike most other web sites in terms of: their user profile; the information needs of users (students); and their intermeshing with offline learning environments. Therefore, they pose interesting problems for usability analysis that are less amenable to traditional criteria. However, as we only consider a single course and site, comparative study is needed to support this conclusion.
