Paper Abstract:      Recent initiatives within the New Zealand tertiary sector have seen an extensive upsurge in eLearning activity. Reports have indicated that to ensure that the sector is able to maximize the effectiveness of the technology and that the technology’s use is underpinned by high quality pedagogy, there is a need for appropriate and effective professional development. This project explored the provision of professional development by undertaking an online survey followed by series of semi-structured interviews in 3 Polytechnics and 2 Universities. The findings of the research indicated that the formal provision of professional development by the institutions was not meeting the needs of the staff and that while most staff saw the need for professional development, they tended to gained their own expertise and skills informally. These findings have implications, not only for the Institutions, but for the staff and perhaps most importantly for the students and strategies need to be explored which will better meet the needs of all parties.
