Paper Abstract:      Peer mentoring is a well established means of student support which, through a community of practice, increases student retention and engagement (Terrion & Leonard 2007). Existing models are based on face-to-face contact. However, primary data collated from Northumbria’s student body illustrated that peer mentoring was overwhelmingly supported but virtual contact on a “needs” basis with mentors would suffice (Smailes et al. 2008). Three virtual alternatives are considered. The two most regular computer based activities students undertake i.e. the use of University systems which support learning and social networking sites (Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) 2008). As well as, virtual worlds – an environment increasingly used in Universities (Kirriemuir 2008). This paper examines the potential of these environments to support peer mentoring in a virtual form. In addition, a planned pilot project is outlined including future potential developments.
