Paper Abstract:
|
The paper focuses on a potential approach on the cantilevered beam overloaded at the free end. It explores a way of
increasing its load-bearing capacity by providing a truss as support rather than oversizing the cross-section of the beam in
order to reduce the mass of the structure. The model can be reduced to a single function of two variables which represent
the actual optimal position of the truss, so a genetic algorithm has been developed to solve the resulted optimization
problem. The approach proved partially viable - the resulting structure has been calculated to be heavier than an
oversized one because of the possibility to increase the cross-sectional area in the direction of the bending effort only. Yet
it can be viable in very specific applications. Since the problem has been simplified (assembly considerations of the
beam-truss joint and the physical possibility of actually building the solution to this problem using this particular set of
parameters), further study is necessary until real economic benefits can be substantiated. |
