Paper Abstract:      Although technical equipment used in cycling is an expanding sector, studies on the actual use and acceptance of technical cycling equipment are rare. This study tries to fill this gap and investigates devices like stopwatches, pulse watches, mobile phones, cyclometers, navigation systems and music devices used in cycling. Results show that mobile phones, music devices, pulse watches and cyclometers are widely used. The use of navigation devices is rare up to now. The frequency of use of pulse watches, cyclometers and mobile phones during cycling is higher for professional cyclists than for hobby and amateur cyclists. Music devices were judged highest in their motivational effect, followed by cyclometers and pulse watches. Users especially appreciate technical devices in cycling for training functionalities (like measuring distance, duration, speed, pulse and storing training data), listening to music (for distraction, motivation and relaxation) and phoning in the case of emergencies.
