Paper Abstract:      Web information retrieval development and deployment is usually a tedious and time consuming process for the Web developer and Web services technology integrator. Usually, valid but ad-hoc procedures are employed using a myriad of techniques that often fall into the ‘reinventing wheel’ trap. Different software engineering techniques and solutions are being actively developed and researched to minimize and shorten time-of-development and time-of-deployment. One such technique is explored, involving the extension of the URI format to allow for complex data-retrieving queries whilst maintaining simplicity. The technique involves defining a new URI scheme that combines URL definition with XPath expressivity. Regular URLs can be defined to specify target documents and XPath expressions added to further refine queries within target documents. As a complementary example, an extension of this technique of data-retrieval is discussed that uses Google Web services as its basis. The results of this example implementation are also described.
