Paper Abstract:      This paper describes and reflects on the educational potential of virtual worlds and draws on the results of the AVATAR project - Added value of teaching in a virtual world - and the ST.ART project - Street Artists in a virtual space – both funded with support by the European Commission under the Lifelong Learning Programme Comenius. The paper describes why virtual worlds may be used in education and how to choose among the myriad of existing virtual words. This approach deals with educational, pedagogical, cultural and motivational benefits and not only with relatively new technology-application. The AVATAR project provides secondary school teachers with methodological and pedagogical tools to use virtual worlds as an innovative teaching tool that motivates and engages pupils and at the same time enhances their learning by incorporating a collaborative learning and a learning by doing approach. In parallel, the ST.ART represent an application of the teaching and learning methods in virtual worlds applied to the specific context of street art in the field of contemporary art. In addition to the projects pedagogical approaches to virtual worlds and the results of the experimentation and pilots, the paper describes new insights and findings that emerged during the experimentation phases of the projects and that were never anticipated when the projects were first designed. These results suggest new possible developments for the future of pedagogy and the educational system in the 21st century.
