Paper Abstract:      Amongst Non Profit-making Organisations, it is recognised that there can be benefit from sharing ideas, experiences and good practice between different domains. This can apply to the client situation and within the development organisations themselves. Knowledge and knowledge sharing are terms recognised and employed in this community and the concept of knowledge sharing is utilised in the way organise themselves. This research aims to discover what is meant by knowledge in Non Profit-making Organisations, and what de facto knowledge creation and sharing mechanisms are used; how far these are distinguished from mere information and how both can be mediated to provide help to stakeholders, including communities of practice and clients. Exploratory research is to be carried out using a flexible research design, incorporating documentary analysis and ethnographic research in on-line communities of practice, which could be said to share a “culture of altruism”. A range of organisations are examined and a framework showing the activities specific to different categories of knowledge sharing organisation is proposed.
