Paper Abstract:      This paper examines certain requisites for the effective development and support of complex computer-based information systems (IS) in organizations, by investigating the role of systems knowledge. The place of system maintenance is highlighted, as this can represent a substantial resource investment. In the organization studied, certain structures and processes had evolved over many years which reinforced the generation and use of the largely tacit knowledge of systems gained through long experience, and in turn provided effective support for IS services and organizational business. During the study, the organization introduced substantial changes to IS structures and processes, which did not adequately consider relevant ‘knowledge’ principles. Thereby they inadvertently acted to undermine the effective exploitation of systems knowledge, and reduced the efficiency of IS services. The changes served to underscore the informal but crucial organizational role of systems knowledge. Inferences are drawn regarding knowledge issues and HRM in organizations with complex systems.
