Paper Abstract:      This paper contributes with practical insights in developing business models for mobile information and communication technology (ICT) tourism services in a peripheral (rural) region, in this case the Åland Islands in Finland. The paper reports on different barriers that need to be overcome in order to implement mobile tourism services in a peripheral region. The identified barriers depend on: local actor features, regional features and mobile channel features. Nevertheless, the proposed business models also promise greater tourist satisfaction and new cash flow for the local actors. The experiences are dawn from an EU and regional government funded project, New Interactive Media (NIM), which has taken different actions in order to deal with the occurred obstacles.
