Paper Abstract:      This paper presents a model for identifying social presence in educational forums and chats. We review the concept of social presence as an important factor for promoting a sense of belonging, and retaining students in distance education, as well as the theoretical basis for the text analysis used in the study. Our work is grounded on the premise that interactions in forums and chats have a significant variety of social presence indicators. The techniques used to identify, label and process the units of analysis are explained. The article closes with a brief description of the software being developed and projected to be inserted as an aiding tool for tutors in Moodle environments.
