Paper Abstract:      The paper examines the adoption and use of human resources information system (HRIS) in a university environment. Universities are acknowledged as unique and yet there is a lack of empirical research that is carried out in such environments, specific to HRIS adoption and use. To this point, the technology organization and environment (TOE) framework was used as a lens to analyze how HRIS was adopted and used. An interpretive, case study of a South African university informed the conceptualization of a framework for how HRIS may be adopted and used sensitive to an African university context. This paper posits that for HRIS adoption and use to be relevant and appropriate there has to be a consideration for environmental context in which the university operates, national and university culture, varied stakeholders, national and university’s contextualized strategy and mandate.
