Paper Abstract:      Handheld devices have revolutionized communication ways and information transmissions. Access to the multimedia resources using this kind of devices opens a new field of application for them. Therefore, their use in guide visits is especially interesting, since we would have cultural information within reach of our hands. We propose a Ubiquitous Digital Guide that uses handheld device abilities to send multimedia information about tourist places to the user. Our proposal has two main points: user localization and multimedia resource transmissions. With respect to this last objective, we work with many types of multimedia resources, such as text, audio, images and videos. In addition, the system uses Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) to transmit information in real time. This protocol allows us to avoid memory constraints in mobile devices. For element identification, we use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, which allows the system to identify user position. We use RFID activation to identify museum items and send the appropriate information to the handheld device.
