Paper Abstract:      In relation to graphical user interface the physical user interface of mobile phones has evolved only on a detailed level during its life span. A large amount of research has been put to improve the usability of mobile phones’ physical user interface and to respond to the increased complexity of mobile services. Still the physical user interface has remained practically unchanged for the last years. The purpose of this research was to study how usability and user interface pro-fessionals working within the academia and industry see the mobile phones’ physical user interface evolution during the next 10 years. The study showed that even though change resistance can be considered a strong hindering factor, both academia and industry believes in significant changes as technological advancements strongly drive the change in mobile phone user interface. The respondents saw multimodality, decentralization of the device and novel display technologies as the most promising development paths.
