Paper Abstract:      In this article, we discuss the patterns on how to develop educational use of ICT in schools. The experiences and conceptions of successful integration of ICT in schools’ everyday life are reported. Participant observation in 20 schools in different parts of Finland was carried out including discussions with principals and teachers. The results show that when promoting new technology and practices in schools many components overlap and support each other. Six categories of successful integration were interpreted: 1) ICT included in strategic planning—as part of culture in schools, 2) teaching and learning methods—participation for empowerment, 3) flexible curriculum, 4) investments in communication, 5) leadership and management and 6) teaching staff’s capacity and commitment. Our research indicates that the school culture that was open, allows staff to take risks when applying new technology, and has a mission to empower different learners and create innovative learning environments.
