Paper Abstract:      ICT departments at universities are challenged to provide software development education that meets the expectations of both the students and the industry to deliver students with applicable professional competencies and behaviours. The question is whether a gap exists between the expectations of students and professionals. This study in South Africa reports on the views of software development students and software development professionals and the results were compared to determine if the views of students regarding professional competencies and behaviours are compatible with the views of professionals. The results revealed a gap in views regarding industry involvement and matching views regarding the importance of soft skills. Recommendations are made to universities and the industry to narrow the expectation gap between students and professionals.
