Paper Abstract:      Events are short-duration processes that can be used to describe and control business processes. Events are used in many different contexts as the basis of information modeling and process modeling. We analyze a set of event-based modeling approaches and we demonstrate that the underlying event concepts appear to be rather different. Based on our analysis we extract a general event concept that can be used to unify the seemingly unrelated event concepts. Our event concept characterizes events as short-duration processes that may be shared by a number of participants, that have consequences, and that can be modeled in terms of information structures. Furthermore, we describe how the general event concept can be used to unify the otherwise unrelated fields of information modeling and process modeling.
