Paper Abstract:      This research examines how student teachers on a one-year Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) course in Northern Ireland developed reflective e-portfolios and then used them to support their professional development with specific reference to teaching using ICT in their first (Induction) year. The paper shows how students’, when they had compiled their e-portfolio, reported gains in confidence in the use of ICT and talked of being more confident in their approaches to teaching and learning. This is important for beginning teachers, particularly when faced with the challenges of making the transition from student to practising teacher. Another issue discussed in this paper is that of how the eportfolio was used to ease the transition from Initial Teacher Education to Induction by providing a basis for dialogue and critical reflection. We argue that where these are lacking, professional development can be inhibited. These issues are discussed within the context of technology policy, teacher training and emerging technology in Northern Ireland.
