Paper Abstract:      Distance medical education has proven to be an attractive alternative for updating medical professionals, although little is known about the profile of this target audience. The profile and performance of those public health system professionals in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, enrolled in a distance electrocardiography course structured into 3 modules with increasing levels of content complexity were evaluated in this article. It was verified that the approval, failure and discontinuance rates did not have significant variations relating to gender and the complexity of the subjects addressed, indicating that the difficulty level of the content may not be a determining factor for the performance and adherence of medical doctors in distance courses. Mostly professionals enrolled in the course were younger, recently graduated in medicine and still undergoing professional training. Given this characteristic of the sample, approval and failure rates were very similar in those groups, indicating great motivation for this education modality. However, difficulties to follow the course suggested little time availability from those professionals to dedicate to distance courses, despite their greater need and interest for them. Medical doctors in the age group above 35 years old seem to be less interested in enrolling in distance courses, however, when they enroll, they tend to get good approval rates, good performance and lower discontinuance rates. Those profile and performance aspects should be considered when planning distance courses for medical professionals.
