Paper Abstract:      The development of a web-based Virtual Museum with VRML and X3D represents a new possibility for the exhibition of the collection and the installations of the Museu Nacional of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. VRML/X3D is a low cost form to exhibit the museum’s collection, and makes possible to exhibit exemplars that, for a diversity of reasons, cannot be exhibited physically in the museum. This paper presents the use of a technology that appears to be a promising way to bring children and the youth closer to science museums, joining together education and entertainment.
