Paper Abstract:      Recently subway ticketing system has been developed into information system by adopting touch screen. Seoul subway kiosk system has newly evolved into full touch screen system in 2009. However, the present subway ticketing kiosk system in Busan has a same feature with ticket vending machine from the past, even though it adopted a touch screen system earlier than Seoul. Thus, there is an opportunity to improve Busan’s subway kiosk system to be evolved into the information system with touch screen. The goal of this paper is to explore possibilities and to suggest a solution idea of the subway ticketing kiosk system with information. Research process contains user centered design methodologies. Design problems were defined by contextual user research to extract non-verbal user needs by observing various usage situations in the subway station. Specific design problems of UI design of the present system were identified by usability testing. It was figured out that the most significant problem was caused from unclear information architecture and information feedback regarding ticketing and related activities for using subway. It was a noteworthy need to decide the quality of user experience. Based on these findings, we developed interactive map based UI design for subway ticketing kiosk system in Busan. It has an interactive map for the subway lines & stations and gives information feedback for the related activities, so user can go through the ticketing process without confusion. The design solution shows the new possibilities for subway ticketing system as an information system with touch screen.
