Paper Abstract:      Physician shortages in rural areas are a serious problem in Japan, especially in isolated islands. We implemented a prefecture-wide information communication network system to (1) support communication among healthcare professionals, and (2) to provide opportunities for learning about the latest developments in their fields. We call this “virtual university” the “Medical Academy of e-Japan at Saga”. This consists of two components, the video conferencing system and e-learning system. We developed e-learning content for healthcare professionals and are using the system for their lifelong, continuing education. Using e-learning system with the video conference system, we believe our e-learning system has successfully contributed to the quality assurance of prefecture-wide healthcare practices as well expanded opportunities for training.
